Annual Review of Competence Progression

ARCPs are being held in absence, with virtual meetings only for unsatisfactory outcomes. Please remember all evidence should first be uploaded onto the Learning Environment for Pathology Trainees (LEPT) system, then linked to capabilities in practice (CiPs) on LEPT and finally linked to an open ARCP that you create on LEPT. If your evidence is not linked to CiPs, you will not be able to link it to an ARCP.

All trainees must upload to LEPT:

  1. Logbook (numbers vary by year): surgical cases, non-cervical cytology, cervical cytology and autopsies.

  2. Work-place based assessments (WBPAs), six of each: AoP, CBD, DOPS, ECE.

  3. Evidence of quality improvement project/audit (or other project/research as agreed with your educational supervisor and training programme director).

  4. Multi-source feedback form, one each for ST1, ST3 and ST5. If your training is extended for any reason, one further MSF is required per additional year.

  5. Form R, parts A & B: this should be completed on the Trainee Information Self-Service Portal, and evidence of this uploaded onto the LEPT system.

  6. Educational supervisor's report (unless you are out of training): more than one may have to be uploaded to cover all the dates since your last report. Please note it is your responsibility to let your ES know the ARCP date and give them enough notice to complete this!

  7. Academic progress report (if applicable).

  8. Work Outside of Training reflection (if applicable): this is only for work undertaken outside of training (including maternity leave), not additional locum shifts within the same Trust under which you are training. Please contact your training programme director if you are unsure if you need this form.

  9. Reflections on any significant events (if applicable): please note this must not contain any patient identifiers. The Conference of Postgraduate Medical Deans of the UK has several resources around reflective practice.

Additional requirements for Stage D trainees (ideally notify your ES and TPD with a month's notice of your upcoming CCT date):

  1. Penultimate year training agreement (PYTA): discuss this training agreement with your TPD and upload onto LEPT. If you have previously received an outcome 2-3, you must have since then achieved an outcome 1 in order to achieve CCT.

  2. Independent reporting: at least 15-20% of your logbook should be independently reported at this stage.

  3. Acting up: keep a record of your activities during this period. The exact responsibilities and duration (maximum 12 weeks) of this must first be agreed with Dr Rathi Ramakrishnan, but can serve as evidence of your competencies to shorten stage D.

  4. Leadership course evidence: the easiest way is to look for free courses within your trust or via PGME.

  5. Completed diagnostic neuropathology, paediatric & perinatal pathology and molecular pathology training.

  6. CCT form: once you have received an outcome 6/CCT, send your outcome form along with your CCT form to Dr Catherine Horsefield. These documents will then be signed by RCPath and sent to GMC for entry to the specialist register (takes about 14 days).

ARCP outcomes you can get:

  • Outcome 1 – Satisfactory progress

  • Outcome 2 – Development required, no extra time e.g. logbook numbers low

  • Outcome 3 – Inadequate progress, extra training time e.g. extra support for neurodivergent trainees

  • Outcome 4 – Released from programme e.g. available time or exam attempts exceeded

  • Outcome 5 – Insufficient evidence e.g. extenuating circumstances resulting in incomplete documentation

  • Outcome 6 – Completion of training (CCT)
